Overview
FC2, Inc. provides a number of services, ranging from website and blog hosting to apps and services to help you grow your web presence. Managing FC2’s dynamic AWS infrastructure to support resource-intensive simulations was becoming increasingly complex and costly. They struggled to optimize AWS EC2 commitments while scaling resources for On-Demand workloads. This led to overspending on the cloud during usage spikes. FC2 also found many idle resources were being underutilized or left running unnecessarily.
The Solution
FC2 turned to nOps to implement cost optimization strategies across their AWS environment. With nOps Commitment Manager and Essentials, FC2 regained control and predictability in their costs.
Commitment Manager provided advanced analytics and automation to achieve optimal AWS commitment coverage. nOps intelligently analyzed FC2’s usage patterns to purchase the ideal mix of Reserved Instances, Saving Plans and Spot Instances. Commitments were automatically modified as workload demands changed to eliminate waste and maximize discounts.
nOps Essentials made it easy for FC2 to add their resources to an automated schedule so they weren’t paying for resources when they weren’t needed. This dramatically reduced their costs for their development, testing and temporary workloads.
Results
Within six months of deploying nOps, FC2 reduced their overall On-Demand AWS spend by 37% through intelligent commitment purchases and scheduling automation. Additionally, their Reserved Instance utilization improved to nearly 96%.
On the operational side, FC2’s engineers no longer had to manually track instance run times or termination schedules. The nOps Scheduler effortlessly handled all start/stop actions based on defined policies.
