New Azure to AWS Cost Assessment

Last Updated: May 28, 2025, Announcement
Precision migration planning powered by FOCUS data & AWS pricing intelligence
Accurately predicting migration cost can be difficult and time-consuming—most assessments rely on estimated discounts, manual service mapping, and assumptions about your environment. This leads to budget overruns, delayed migrations, and weak business cases.
The Azure to AWS Cost Assessment uses actual Azure usage and real AWS pricing to deliver accurate, service-level cost projections—so you can identify savings and plan migrations with confidence.
What’s New
Now available in the nOps platform, Azure to AWS Cost Assessment leverages FOCUS data to automatically extract technical specifications from your Azure environment and map them to AWS services—eliminating cost uncertainty and accelerating planning.
Real AWS Pricing Intelligence
Unlike tools that apply discount estimations to Azure costs, we calculate actual AWS costs using all relevant data, including:
- Region-specific pricing (us-west-2 vs us-east-1 rates)
- OS-specific adjustments (Windows vs Linux Reserved Instance rates)
- Exact instance type matching (Azure D16 v3 → AWS m5.4xlarge)
- Commitment-based pricing (takes existing commitments into account)
Let’s take a look at a quick real-world example saving 18.8%.
Azure Environment | AWS Like-for-Like |
|
|
Complete Service Coverage
The assessment analyzes of your Azure services and maps each to its AWS equivalent.
Azure Service | AWS Equivalent | Typical Savings |
Virtual Machines | EC2 | 17.3% |
Azure Monitor | CloudWatch | 62.9% |
SQL Database | RDS | 9.2% |
Application Gateway | ALB | 40.5% |
Storage Accounts | S3 + EBS | 8.4% |
Business Case Generation
Each assessment generates a detailed business case with:
- 3-year total cost of ownership (TCO) projection
- Monthly cash flow breakdown
- Per-service savings analysis
- Commitment strategy recommendations (e.g., No Upfront RIs)
Each business case includes both BilledCost (actual Azure charges) and ListCost (retail AWS pricing) for a complete financial picture.
How It Works
The full process takes less than 45 minutes. To get started:
Integrate your Azure FOCUS export. Follow this step-by-step guide to configure Azure Focus Export in nOps
Extract technical specifications. nOps parses the FOCUS data to extract key details for each resource, including vCPU, memory, OS type, region, usage hours, and metered consumption (e.g., compute, storage, network)
Map to AWS equivalents. Each Azure resource is mapped to the closest AWS service using our intelligent mapping engine:
- High Confidence (90%): Exact spec match (e.g., D16 v3 → m5.4xlarge)
- Medium Confidence (8%): Near equivalent with validated assumptions
- Low Confidence (2%): Flagged for manual validation
Apply real AWS pricing. Region-specific public pricing, OS-based adjustments, and commitment pricing (if applicable) are applied.
Generate a detailed migration report & cost assessment.
- Executive Summary with key metrics and ROI
- Detailed Service Analysis with AWS mappings & risk assessment
- Business Case Documentation with 3-year projections
- Technical Migration Plan
